Reassessment of the Side Pike Concept Cumberland Excursion 2018 PDF Online
Starts: 10:00
Location: Wrynose Pass, Ambleside LA22, UK
Those attending are asked to make arrangements amongst themselves to place enough cars at the end of the traverse to ensure that drivers of cars left at Three Shire Stone, Wrynose Pass Summit, can be returned to collect their cars. The traverse will end at the cattle grid at Side Pike [NY 289051] where there is very limited parking though more parking is available at the National Trust car parks at Blea Tarn [NY 296044] and The Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel [NY 285062].
This trip will examine the complex volcanic geology of the area and an introductory explanation is attached. This is one of our more arduous excursions, entirely off paths apart from the final descent. An ascent of 140 m is followed by a 3km contouring traverse and then a 300m descent to the road below Side Pike. It will be necessary to co-ordinate between various drivers so that some cars can be left at the end point to take drivers back to vehicles at Three Shire Stone while passengers make for the Old Dungeon Hotel. Details of this co-ordination will also be available from the web-site. A poor weather alternative will be considered if appropriate.
